R9 280X and Radeon HD 7970 GHz work in CrossFire

The same chips

Since quite a while, in fact a few years, AMD offers a high level of flexibility regarding multi GPU solutions. Therefore it doesn't come as a surprise to us that graphics cards, which feature the same chip, can run in a CrossFire setup.

The guys over at HardwareCanucks gave a setup based on a Radeon R9 280X combined with a Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition a shot in running in a CrossFire configuration. Actually, both these GPU's are based on one and the same "Tahiti" GPU and apparently the system runs just fine. Also scaling seems to be perfectly in line, which you can check over at HardwareCanucks.

Furthermore the Canadiens mention that combining a Radeon R9 270X with a Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition won't be an issue either. Since both cards are based on a "Pitcairn" chip.
