Japan Display shows first 4K/UHD for 10-inch tablets

Extremely high resolution with low power consumption

Founded by Sony, Toshiba and Hitachi, the LCD specialist, Japan Display Inc., has unveiled the new Ultra HD display for 10-inch tablets. It will provide much higher pixel density than conventional and currently available tablets and has a 3840x2160 resolution.

When added up, the pixel density ends up at 438 ppi (pixel-per-inch). For comparison sake, Apple's iPad Air comes at around 264 ppi and Google Nexus 10 has 299 ppi. The new Ultra HD display has the same battery performance as seen on 10.1-inch screen with 2560x1600 resolution while it provides maximum brightness of 400cd/m2. The maximum contrast is at 1100:1.

Currently, there are only a few mobile platform that pack enough graphics punch in order to use the extremely high 3840x2160 pixels resolution. According to Japan Display, the first test samples of the display have been delivered to various manufacturers.

A more precise time window for the availability of an actual tablet with 4K/UHD resolution screen is still unknown but industry experts are saying that we can expect them in the first half of 2015.
