Intel Core i7-4790 Haswell Refresh previewed

Tweaktown jumps the gun

TweakTown has jumped the gun and posted a first formal review of the fastest upcoming Intel Haswell Refresh Core i7-4790 CPU and compared it to the Core i7-4770K.

Although it lacks the unlocked base-clock multiplier of the K-series, the Core i7-4790 turned out to be just as what it was expected, a 100MHz bumped CPU which is slightly faster than the Core i7-4770K. The Core i7-4790 is clocked at 3.6GHz and has a maximum Turbo Boost clock of 4.0GHz which is exactly 100MHz higher than 3.5/3.9GHz on the Core i7-4770K.

To make things worse, since this is not a K-series CPU and lacks an unlocked base-clock multiplier, the overclocking potential is very limited and, according to the published review/preview, almost non-existent. It is obvious that Core i7-4790 will not impress any overclockers or enthusiasts, especially those which are already running the Core i7-4770K.

Of course, those looking for more will wait for the Intel Devil's Canyon, a line of hand-picked chips with much better overclocking potential and performance optimized TIM, high-tolerance packages, special LGA contact points, higher voltage tolerance levels, so basically everything that should appeal to overclockers.

In any case you can check out the review/preview over at Tweaktown.com via link below.
