More Nvidia Geforce GTX 900 details show up

170W TDP and mixed performance numbers

Over the weekend we have seen a handful of rumors regarding upcoming Nvidia GTX 980 graphics card including a couple of retail/e-tail listings, more details regarding the actual GPU, TDP as well as some mixed performance results and rumors.

First piece of leaked information came from Synnex, a distributor of PC hardware, which listed two ASUS Geforce GTX 900 series graphics cards, including the reference GTX 980 and the STRIX GTX 970 model, as well as two Gigabyte graphics cards, including also reference GTX 980 and a custom GTX 970, the GTX 970 G1 Gaming.

As rumored earlier, Nvidia AIC partners will initially launch Geforce GTX 970/980 graphics card with 4GB of GDDR5 memory but 8GB and custom-cooled versions should be expected at a later date. As far as the GPU is concerned, we are looking at the GM204 which should replace the GK104 GPU. While some rumors suggest that we might see a performance close to the GTX 780 Ti, this is pretty unlikely considering that the GTX 780 Ti was based on the GK110 GPU, rather than GK104, which puts it a whole different level of performance. The rumored TDP for the GTX 980 is set at 170W which is not bad if the performance is good, but that is something that we already expected from Maxwell architecture.

There were quite a few performance rumors over the weekend, and while some, like Chiphell Forum post, suggest that the GTX 980 outperforms the GTX 780 Ti, some other, like Kitguru.com. suggest that it will be closer to the GTX 780 and that GTX 780 Ti performance is a while different story. According to our sources, this comes as a result of some issues that partners currently have, most likely driver issues. The GTX 980 performance quite well in 3DMark where it even manages to outperform the GTX 780 Ti, but in any other scenario, it is anywhere between 20 to 50 percent slower, which puts it in a more of a GTX 780 non-TI range.

We would be pleasantly surprised if the performance of the GTX 980 ends up to be higher than the GTX 780 Ti, especially since the rumored price is set at US $499. But as always, you should take these rumors with a grain of salt and wait for the official launch and official benchmarks.

Nvidia will most likely launch its new GTX 900 series during the scheduled Game 24 event which should kick off on 18th of September.
