More details on AMD X390 and X399 chipsets

The new high-end parts from AMD

A Reddit user posted two diagrams showing details on the upcoming AMD X390 and X399 chipsets. Both of them should be compatible with the allegedly upcoming AMD Ryzen 9 series CPU, which might feature 12 or even 16 cores. Although we don't know if these diagrams are real or fake, they certainly look like something that could be possible for AMD to come up with.

The motherboard diagram is coming from ASUS, since there is an AURA ASIC on-board, which is the chip behind the AURA LED from ASUS. This is an interesting fact since we have all assumed that the 16-core part might be a server CPU, however we don't believe that a server motherboard might come with RGB AURA lighting. The processor socket is labeled as AM44 and it’s quite a bit bigger than the current socket AM4 that you can find on the X370 motherboards. Furthermore there are supposed to be eight DIMM slots, which indicates that there will be a quad-channel memory interface.

The same Reddit user also posted two more diagrams showing the X399 chipset for dual-CPU motherboards and X390 for single-CPU motherboard. Since the first diagram mentions ECC memory, it might be compatible with Naples CPUs and target the workstation/server market. The second one shows the AMD X390 chipset which is allegedly compatible with Ryzen HEDT chips, which might feature up to 16 cores.

On another note it’s interesting to see that diagrams also mention the PCI-Express lane count. In the case of the AMD X390 chipset 44 PCI-Express lanes are mentioned. This would be enough to build absolute high-end systems with multi-GPU setups, while still having spare lanes for all the additional I/O you’d want. Just for reference, Intel’s flagship Core i7-6950X on X99 platform packs 40 PCI-Express lanes.
