Intel might release a six-core mainstream processor

In three months already?

In order to reply to AMD's new Ryzen and Threadripper CPUs, Intel is planning to increase the core count on their next-generation desktop platform. According to the latest rumors, Intel might add a six core CPU regarding their 8th generation of mainstream desktop CPUs.

The new generation of CPUs should compete with AMD’s socket AM4 offerings in terms of raw CPU performance and core count, while the Intel X299 should fight against AMD Threadripper. According to Winfuture, Intel's upcoming Skylake-R series of CPUs is going to be released in February 2018, which would be one year after Kaby Lake-S. These upcoming chips are supposed to feature a total of six CPU cores and twelve threads in total. In the case of manufacturing process Intel will stick to their 14nm process node. Furthermore, Intel is also expected to release 15W U-series CPUs which should fit inside low-power ultrabooks.

At the moment the new six core Kaby Lake CPUs are rumoured to be called "Coffee Lake" and they will be compatible with Intel's socket LGA 1151. As previously mentioned from Benchlife, it's still unclear if these new processors will be compatible with the existing Z170 or Z270 chipset based motherboards.
