Intel reveals their high-end Skylake-X CPU lineup

Up to 18 cores

During the PC Gaming Show E3, Intel has revealed the Core X series of CPUs. While the first Kaby Lake-X and Skylake-X chips are already available since last June the flagship models will become available in October. According to the latest information, the Core i9-7980XE features 18 cores and 36 threads, and it is combined with 24.75 MB of L3 cache. The base clock is set to 2.60GHz which is a pretty significant step down from the Core i9-7940X's 3.1GHz.

The new slides show all the details on the Skylake-X family, which will consist of 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 core SKUs. All of them will have 44/28 PCIe 3.0 lanes, no integrated graphics, up to 24.75MB of last level cache and support for DDR4-2666 and DDR4-2400 memory. Skylake-X comes with Turbo Boost 3.0 onboard and a TDP of up to 165W.

The upcoming Core i9 will reach impressive boost clock speeds. For example the Intel Core i9-7980XE comes with a base clock of 2.6GHz, Boost 2.0 set to 4.2GHz and a Boost 3.0 set to 4.4GHz. Unsurprisingly the prices are impressive: the Core i9-7980XE costs $1999 dollars, the i9-7960X hits $1699 US, the i9-7940X $1399 US and the i9-7920X reaches $1199 US.

Since the hard launch of AMD Ryzen Threadripper launch is pretty close, it's not a surprise if Intel wants to unveil all their upcoming CPUs just now. Since the AMD Threadripper CPUs are way more affordable, we are pretty curious to see how Intel is going to compete against AMD.
