Coffee Lake processors run on a modded Z170 motherboard

With microcode updated

One of the biggest complains about Coffee Lake processors and their 300-series chipset is the lack of compatibility with older Intel 200-series and 100-series chipset motherboards. Despite this fact, a group of modders have managed to make things work together.

When Intel release a new series of CPUs, it's common for the company to offer some form of backwards compatibility. With Kaby Lake, Coffee Lake predecessor, Intel released Z270 chipset motherboards to make the most of its functionality working, but still managed to work on the previous Z170 motherboards.

According to Intel, the company has released a new chipset with Coffee Lake because the power delivery was different and make the motherboard backwards compatibility was impossibile.

Although Coffee Lake share the same LGA1151 socket of the two previous chipsets, the current CPUs are officially supported by Intel 300-series chipset only. A few months ago, a modder has successfully booted a Core i3-8350K on an old Z170 motherboard, and today other modders have addressed all the stability issues.

A few days ago, a group of modders have posted a complete guide about the flashing procedure. According to the thread, it's now possibile flash via BIOS the microcode and uses a Coffee Lake processors on an Intel Z170/Z270 motherboards. On following you can find a direct link to the guide.
