Transcend steps into the NVMe SSD market

With two drives

NVMe capable SSDs are growing increasingly popular these days, offering much higher transfer speeds than the usual SATA drive. Transcend is now ready to launch two drives, which are compatible with Mac OS and Windows. The MT820 is designed for Windows PCs while the JetDrive 820 is compatible with Macs after late-2013.

The MTE820 NVMe SSD is supposed to be available with 128GB, 256GB and 512GB capacity. The unit uses 3D TLC NAND flash memory instead of 3D MLC flash memory like the previous model. As most NVMe SSDs out today, the MTE820 NVMe SSD comes in a M.2 2280 form factor with a PCIe Gen 3.0 x4 interface. Talking about performance, sequentially reading these drives should hit up to 1'760MB/s and 860MB/s in the case of sequential writes.

The JetDrive 820 is available with 240GB, 480GB and 960GB capacity. Performance wise, this drive can hit up to 950 MB/s reads and writes, on Macs with PCIe 3.0 NGFF slots. On older Macs with gen 2.0 slots, it offers up to 700 MB/s reads and up to 650 MB/s writes.

Included in the delivery, Transcend offers a free download of their SSD Scope software that monitors the drive's status and health. Furthermore the tool can check the S.M.A.R.T. status, performs diagnostic scans and if you wish you can secure erase the drive. All the drives are backed by 3 years of warranty. So far Transcend has not revealed details on pricing and availability on their new SSDs.
