Samsung unveils SZ985 800GB Z-SSD

1.5GB RAM cache

NVMe capable SSDs are growing increasingly popular these days, offering much higher transfer speeds than your usual SATA drive. New markets always offer new opportunities and that on the other hand means that different vendors will launch new products. Samsung today announced the SZ985 800GB Z-SSD, targeted at enterprises and data-centers with high bandwidth demands. The drives come in the half-height add-on card form-factor and it's using a PCI-Express 3.0 x4 host interface.

The new Samsung SZ985 PCI-Express NVMe SSD is available with 800 GB capacity. Talking about performance, sequentially reading and writing this drive should hit up to 3'200MB/s with a typical random latency of 12 – 16 µs. The 4K random access performance is 750'000 / 170'000 IOPS (reads/writes). The SZ985 sports a high perfomance controlled paired with 1.5GB LPDDR4 DRAM cache.

The drive come with full-length heatsinks, cooling the flash chips, the controller and a bank of capacitors that provide data-loss protection in the case of a power loss. The endurance guarantees up to 30 drive writes per day (DWPD) for five years, or a total of 42 petabytes.

So far Samsung has not revealed any details on pricing and availability regarding their SZ985, but during the next ISSCC 2018 (International Solid-State Circuits Conference) we should see more details.
